The Variation of Animals and Plants under Domestication

DARWIN, CHARLES

The Variation of Animals and Plants under Domestication

New York: Orange Judd & Co. , 1868

FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. In this work, Darwin first proposed his theory of pangenesis as the mechanism of heredity. The theory holds that body cells shed “gemmules” that collect in the reproductive organs, thus transmitting their characteristics to the next generation. Mendelʼs theory of genetics supplanted this theory in the early 1900s.
